They generate the laser beam by means of a so-called seed laser and amplify it into specially designed glass fibers, which are supplied with energy by pump diodes. Fiber lasers have a wavelength of 1.064 micrometers and produce extremely small focal diameters; as a result, they are 100 times more intense than CO2 lasers with the same emitted average power.

Desktop laser marking machines are best suited for metal marking by annealing, metal engraving and high-contrast plastic marking. Fiber lasers are typically maintenance-free and have a long service life of at least 100,000 laser hours.
